NZeTA & IVL - Infomation
New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority & International Visitor Conservation & Tourism Levy
From 1 October 2019, many visitors coming to New Zealand must request and pay for an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before they travel.
The primary purpose why New Zealand has introduced the NZeTA is to improve border security and prevent anyone who may pose a potential security risk from entering New Zealand.
Passport holders from some countries and territories that have historically not had to apply for a visitors visa before they travel to New Zealand, must now apply for and hold an NZeTA.
Who needs an NZeTA?
Visiting New Zealand: You are required to hold an NZeTA if you are travelling on a passport from a visa waiver country or territory, or if you are an Australian permanent resident.
Passing through Auckland International Airport: You must hold an NZeTA to pass through Auckland International Airport as a transit passenger: on the way to or from Australia; on the way to another country — you must be travelling; on a passport from a transit visa waiver country, or a visa waiver country or territory.
Cruise passengers from a visa required country: If you are a cruise ship passenger from a visa required country travelling to New Zealand on a cruise ship, you can hold an NZeTA or a visa. If you are flying into New Zealand to meet a cruise ship you must hold a visa.
Who does not need an NZeTA?
New Zealand and Australian passport holders and travellers who hold a valid New Zealand visa do not need an NZeTA.
What is the IVL?
The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) is a way for you to contribute directly to the tourism infrastructure you use and help protect the natural environment you enjoy during your stay in New Zealand. Most visitors also need to pay the IVL which is payable at the same time you request your NZeTA.
Things to note
From 1 October 2019, if you are from a visa waiver country you must hold an NZeTA before you travel.
Allow up to 72 hours for processing, but it could take as little as 10 minutes.
